Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan is an American singer/songwriter who had many hit songs throughout the 20th century. He is also well known for the politically charged nature of some of his songs, which was related to the Vietnam War and other social and political issues at the time. Many of his songs and acoustic covers were so-called protest songs, and were used as such. Some popular live acoustic versions of his include his hits Blowin’ In The Wind, and ‘Hard Rain’. Have a look online and see which live acoustic versions you’d like to add to your library.
Rush
This band from Canada may be lesser known to some people, but they are truly an amazing group with many great acoustic covers worth adding to your music library. Rush featured drummer Neil Peart, bassist Geddy Lee, and guitarist Alex Lifeson. They got their start in the late 1960s in Toronto Canada, where they began to write music and perform together live and in the studio.
They were soon touring the world with other bands from Canada, such as prog-rock phenoms Max Webster, which included iconic Canadian drummer Gary McCracken, and singer/guitarist Kim Mitchell. These two bands would tour often, and helped to bring the Canadian rock music world onto the global scene. Check out some acoustic covers of their famous song ‘Closer to the Heart’.
The Rolling Stones
Another extremely popular classic rock band which you might want to add to your music library is The Rolling Stones. The Stones got their start in the 1960s in England, and they have basically been touring the world as a huge act ever since. Since they have been around for such a long time, it can sometimes be difficult to find hard copies of their older music.
Fortunately we live in an age when you can convert youtube to mp3 with a few clicks of the mouse and some copy and pasting. Sometimes there is no other way to secure a copy of your favourite live version of a track such as Jumpin’ Jack Flash, which has an amazing live performance from the famous Rolling Stones Project, produced by Tim Ries. This amazing cover features acoustic performers from all over the world, and was filmed and recorded live in a single take. This is not something you want to miss out on.
The Beatles
John, Paul, George, and Ringo are perhaps one of the most popular and commercially successful bands in recorded history. Up until The Beatles, the only musical act who garnered as much fame was probably Elvis Presley. The band alongside acclaimed producer George Martin is responsible for writing innumerable hit singles, and creating many revolutionary albums.
One song written by The Beatles which has many great acoustic covers is ‘Blackbird’. The original recording is also performed on the acoustic guitar, so if you want a non-live acoustic cover to work on, then this might be a great choice.
